How does time work in AFL?

I've seen matches where the time counts down to 0:00 and the siren sounds, but I've seen a couple matches where the clock will suddenly go from countdown-style to counting up and it's up in the 30's. Can someone explain this to me?? (I'm American so excuse my lack of knowledge haha)I've seen matches where the time counts down to 0:00 and the siren sounds, but I've seen a couple matches where the clock will suddenly go from countdown-style to counting up and it's up in the 30's. Each quarter is meant to go for 20:00 minutes. But that countdown clock stops throughout quarters due to stoppages (i.e Ball ups, ball goes out of bounds, goal/behind is scored). So to get through those 20 minutes with all the stoppages usually takes around 30 minutes, which is what the count-up clock is for. Hope you can understand that, other hopefully someone else can explain it better later on then :)
