How long does it take to render someone unconscious with a rear naked choke?

There is no perfect answer for this simply because it can depend on the person you perform the choke on. If they have very good defense against the choke and do not panic then the choke takes a little longer but still eventually works.

Against someone who is not as well versed at defending the choke then they will panic when it is applied and can be choked out in as little as 4-5 seconds if done by an experienced grappler.

Applied correctly means being able to control pressure on both of the carotid chambers on either side of the neck with both your forearm and bicep. The carotid chambers consist of the Carotid artery, both the internal and external chamber and the Jugular vein. These supply blood to and from the brain.

Your other arm supplied force from behind to push their head forward and sink the neck down harder onto your forearm and bicep. it forms a triangle shape that squeezes the neck. applied correctly should have no pressure on their windpipe and will not hurt the opponent at all. in fact many can talk to you while the choke is applied then there is a lightheaded feeling where the blood is failing to leave the brain fast enough and supply the brain with fresh blood (oxygen) and the brain begins to shut itself down to stop injury.

This choke is very dangerous if not performed correctly, firstly if you do not do it properly you can crush the windpipe and second if you hold the choke to long you can cause severe damage (including a stroke) or death to the person.

About five seconds if it is applied correctly. For a proper rear naked choke, you are using the forearm and bicep to cut the blood flow to the brain. As you are squeezing your opponent's neck, you want to push his head down. This tightens the choke.

The opposite is doing what's called an air choke, in where you are putting your forearm against someone's windpipe.

The safer version is the rear naked. The reason they give the 5 - 10 second gap is due to the size of the person's neck you are choking, how well he is manipulating his body/your arms to counter and escape the choke.

I've worked in bar security and I've been grappling for about five years. Against trained fighters, it seems to take about 7 to 10 seconds in the few times I've seen guys get put to sleep. They're smart, they stay calm and find ways to alleviate the pressure for a few minutes. In self defense situations, where the person is panicking and flipping out I've seen the lights go out in about 5 seconds before. But these are only estimations.

Thats like a really tough thing to do thats only done in movies.

So I've heard it can take around 5 to 10 seconds 'if applied correctly' to render someone unconscious with a rear naked choke but didn't know if that was correct, can anyone confirm this?

Also what is meant exactly by 'applied correctly'? and is it at all difficult or tricky to actually apply it 'correctly'?
